Agua de Horchata Ingredients
- 5 cups water
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
- 2 cinnamon sticks broken (see note 2)
- 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Ice cubes
- 1/3 cup maple syrup
- fresh crushed mint (optional)
- sesame (optional)
Agua de Horchata recipe step by step
- Combine the water, rice, and cinnamon sticks in a medium mixing bowl. Soak in the tub for 2 hours.
- Transfer to a blender and blend until smooth, with no visible whole grains of rice (do not remove the cinnamon sticks).
- Allow 3 to 7 hours in the refrigerator to steep. The longer you leave it, the creamier your horchata will become.
- To remove most or all of the pulp, strain through a fine-mesh strainer.
- Stir in the remaining 2 cups water, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, and maple syrup. You can give it a quick blend to make sure everything is well combined.
- Serve over ice or chill until ready to serve, and top with a pinch of ground cinnamon if desired.
